David Cauchi makes low-key motorsport return

Cauchi left the sport after finishing up his Grove duties at the end of 2025, citing a desire to take a break after 18 years in the Supercars paddock.

He relocated from Melbourne to Brisbane and has been working for earthwork supply company JGI Quarry.

Cauchi appeared at Queensland Raceway to help run the Multispares Racing Ford Mustang of Cameron McLeod/Mason Harvey in the GT4 Australia Series.

The connection came through veteran engineer Wally Storey, who had originally helped Cauchi enter the sport in the mid-2000s.

“Wally reached out to me and asked if I could come and help out for the weekend, being a local round,” Cauchi told Speedcafe.

“It was nice to work with Wally. Those two young drivers are very fast and professional and we managed to get on the podium.

“It was good fun.”

Cauchi’s exit from Grove Racing included a six-month period of gardening leave, which concluded in mid-March.

Although QR was his first time working at a race meeting since the end of 2025, he did attend a NASCAR race as a spectator during a holiday to the US.

“I went to the Las Vegas NASCAR race as a spectator with Shane [van Gisbergen], and saw the two NRL games over there,” he said.

“I have some family there too, and I also went over to Charlotte and caught up with some friends who work with various NASCAR teams and manufacturers.

“Since coming back to Australia I’ve gotten into some work and settled back into Brisbane. So I’m plodding along, quietly.”

Cauchi described the QR appearance as a one-off for now and said he’s not in any rush to return to professional motorsport.

“As always, I never say never, but I’m happy doing my thing outside of the industry,” he said.

“It’s something I miss, it’s something that was part of my life for a very long time, so I miss the competition and the people you meet along the way.

“But for now I’m also happy watching it on TV.”
